Giờ này chữ Thăng - Aundant Successes 

Nhưng cuối cùng chữ Trầm rồi cũng chuyển mình, từ sâu hóa bướm, hóa ra chữ Thăng. 

Trận hồng thuỷ trong trang sử Việt mang nhiều mảnh đời Việt Nam trôi dạt sang xứ người. Nhiều sinh mạng đã bỏ mình trên đường bộ và đường biển. Nhưng cũng nhiều sinh mạng đã đặt chân tới bờ. 

Sau những ngày tháng vật vờ tại trại tỵ nạn Thái Lan, Mã Lai, Nam Dương, Hồng Kông, những người sống sót không tuyệt vọng, nhưng âm thầm và kiên nhẫn làm lại từ đầu với hai bàn tay trắng. 

Rồi thương xá Việt: Little Saigon, Thung Lũng Hoa Vàng. 

Rồi con cái Việt lớn lên hoặc sinh ra trên vùng đất mới, vươn vai cao lớn, sắc son giữ gìn truyền thống Việt Nam.

Rồi những thành tựu mới tinh khôi trên vùng đất mới. 

Rồi niềm tin vào mình và vào người, niềm tin vững vàng. 

Rồi niềm hy vọng vào một ngày mai, hy vọng tràn trề. 

Cộng đồng Việt Nam hải ngoại như rồng vàng Thăng Long ngày nào vươn cao, chuyển mình thay đổi. Thành công của cộng đồng Việt Nam hải ngoại sau biến cố 75 là một điều không thể từ chối. 

Ngày 30 tháng 4 năm 75, anh tôi, lính Thủy Quân Lục Chiến bước chân lên tàu di tản tại bến cảng Vũng Tàu ngay giờ phút Sài Gòn hấp hối. Mấy năm sau, nhờ những thước vải và hộp thuốc tây anh gửi về, gia đình tôi cầm cự với cơm trộn bo bo và khoai sắn. 

Năm 82, sau những hãi hùng với biển và người, thuyền tôi dừng lại tại bến cảng Mã Lai. 

Năm 87, mẹ tôi, chị và em đường bộ đặt chân tới đất Thái. 

Giờ này Thung Lũng Hoa Vàng trở thành quê hương thứ hai (riêng Mẹ tôi, quê hương thứ ba). Nơi đó, thế hệ thứ ba và thứ tư của gia đình tôi đang vươn cao hóa ra thiếu nữ thanh niên, vừa nói tiếng Việt giọng Bắc vừa nói tiếng Anh giọng Mỹ. Cháu tôi đọc bài tôi viết, và không bao giờ hỏi tôi chuyện đó chuyện thật hay giả tưởng, bởi chính bố mẹ các cháu là nhân chứng cho một giai đoạn của chữ Trầm. 

Biến cố tháng 4 năm 1975 sẽ được ghi lại trên trang sách lịch sử Việt Nam. Hậu thế Việt Nam sẽ đánh giá và nhận xét về một giai đoạn đánh dấu bằng hai cột mốc: Hiệp Định Geneva chia đôi đất nước năm 1954 và Hiệp Định Paris dẫn tới biến cố năm 1975. Nhận xét và đánh giá ra sao, không ai biết. Nhưng mỗi lần tháng 4 quay về trên những trang lịch, người Việt hải ngoại vẫn nhắc nhở nhau những câu chuyện của một thời, thời của chữ Trầm. Riêng đối với tôi, nhắc để nhớ và trên hết tất cả hy vọng tôi học được một bài học quý giá cho riêng mình để chữ Trầm sẽ không bao giờ lập lại thêm một lần nữa. 

Ngày 30 tháng 4, như một thường lệ vẫn quay về trên những trang lịch. Tờ lịch 30 tháng 4 hằng năm nhắc nhở người Việt một thời bể dâu và cũng là dấu mốc thành công của cộng đồng hải ngoại. 30 Tháng 4 của ngày hôm nay là của chữ Trầm và trên tất cả cũng là của chữ Thăng.

But, just like a caterpillar that transformed to the butterfly, the word of “despair” has been gracefully transformed to the word of “success.” 

The great flood in the history of Vietnam had washed away numerous Vietnamese lives to the shores of her neighbors: Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Many lives had been unfortunately lost on the journey to freedom. Many lives had fortunately arrived on the many shores of the Southeast Asia. 

After the refugee camps in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and the Philippines, the survivors were brought to the resettlement in new homelands: the US, Australia, Canada and Germany, to name a few. The former boat people did not however let the despairing period of the past cripple their souls, but quickly commenced to rebuild their new lives from technically empty handed with all means and by all efforts. 

Then Vietnamese towns have been built: Little Saigon in southern California and Vietnam Town in northern California. 

The Vietnamese children have grown up and yet proudly maintained the core identity of Vietnam.

Then new successes,

Then self-confident and trust, trust people, trust society! 

Then new hope, hope in the future, abundant hope! 

Just like the Thang Long golden dragon of the Ly dynasty, the Vietnamese communities abroad have raised up from the ash heap. The successes of the oversea Vietnamese communities are undisputed. 

On April 30, 1975, my brother boarded a boat at Vung Tau harbor right at the moment Saigon breathed her last. A few years later, due to the packages of medicines and clothes sent home by him from the US, my family in Saigon had survived the collective impoverished lifestyle fashioned by the new owners of the city.

In 1982, my fishing boat rested in Malaysia. 

In 1987, my mother, my sisters and nephews arrived in Thailand by foot (via Cambodia). 

The Silicon Valley, California has become our second hometown (my mom, the third for she had fled North Vietnam for freedom after the Geneva Accords 1954). In this vast valley, the third and also the fourth generation of my extended family have been raised up into young teen-agers who master both languages, English with American accent and Vietnamese with northern one. My nephew and nieces read my essays but never ask me if these stories are matters of fiction, for they have been explained by their parents the reasons why they are Vietnamese but born in the US. Indeed, their parents are the living witnesses for such a despairing period. 

The tragedy of April 1975 will be recorded in the Vietnamese history. Future generations will evaluate the period marked by two major events in the Vietnamese history: The Geneva Accords divided Vietnam into two nations in 1954 and the Paris Accords in 1973 which led to the Fall of Saigon. How the next generations evaluate this period remains unknown! But whenever the very last day of April returns to the earth, the Vietnamese communities abroad remind one another of the Fall of Saigon with the hope that the period of despair will not happen again in the Vietnamese history. On the other side of the same coin, the date of April 30 has also become a significant remark of an enormous success of the overseas Vietnamese communities. 

Today’s April 30 indeed marks the period of DESPAIR and above all the period of SUCCESS.
